The mathematical proofs and calculations that are behind statistical tables and computation programs make strict distinctions among the several forms of information (Table 111-1). One grouping of knowledge, termed interval data, is straightforward steady numerical measurements. Often, discrete numerical measurements, corresponding to counts or integral portions in the same categorization, are described. In practical use, each steady and discrete information could be handled by techniques much like these used for interval data. One type of categorical knowledge is ordinal information, which refers to the ordering or rating of topics. The thought of a most likely central worth with different values scattered evenly to both sides is a classic statistical idea with deep mathematical roots. It suits in properly with an intuitive thought of a true worth with measurements randomly distributed around the true worth in such a method that extra values are near the center than are distant. The strict use of normal distribution implies very giant quantities of continuous interval information. Fortunately, most computerized statistical packages can cope with this problem with good effect. In common, the mathematical description of the location of the values is termed the distribution.
